I'd written the day off due to the poor lapse rate on paper, but it did look reasonably good from midday on viewed from downtown SG, but fairly low cloudbase in the mountains. It was SE most of the day, but not too bad. A little light on the water, but perhaps a little more wind in the costal mountains. As the afternoon cooled, the direction began to clock around to the west, and the sea breeze freshened. Judging by the multitude of birds out in force, it appeared to be working all along the costal cliffs (Wilcox, Summerland, Bates), but didn't see humans airborne.
Checked out Bates sometime after 6. There was a flock of Pelicans soaring about 4-500 over, doing 360s in a gaggle. The direction was ok, a little cross from the west, but not too bad. There was more wind to the west. A little light at the upper Bates launch, but a better breeze just a quarter mile to the west.
