Weather Archive for Sunday 9/19/04
The jet stream took a dive southward and brought the first post frontal conditions of the season earlier than typical. No rain, but a cold unstable air mass and plenty of wind at the beach. Debbie was threatening to block mid morning, but turned around and went the other way. Bates came on and was soarable by 11. It built steadily and was nuking later in the afternoon. We used Sharon's Hall wind meter on the cliff behind her house in the middle of the afternoon. The gage only goes to 35, and it was pegged 80% of the time with lulls into the high 20's. Our guess is that it was gusting over 40, as indicated by the Oxnard Airport observation.
The wind seemed to be a lot less inland, so Ojai might have been flyable, but didn't here any reports.
Altitudes along the Rincon were a little low, but adequate to make the connection ok.
There were some Hang Glider pilots at Bates, but they needed to women and children to sacrifice before venturing off.
