Chiefs (Ojai) to Toro Canyon Road (Tandem)

Day 2

Took the opportunity to go tandem with Tom.  There was quite a turnout.  And Art was there with his hangglider for a first run off Chiefs!  After a perfect launch (anyone got any pictures of that?) we headed out.  I refer you to Tom’s description of the flight.  I just want to say that the view of White Ledge from the back side is truly amazing.  There are these jagged rocks that stick out from a ledge. I always thought it would be smooth.

We traveled way back into canyons that no one would ordinarily think to go into.  Tom explained that the west wind was blocked by White Ledge so we wouldn’t get totally trashed.  Talk about feeling committed.  The idea was not to look out to see how far we were back in there.  It got a bit wild and turbulent but Tom’s control was terrific.

We hugged the mountains trying to catch what little lift there was.  We would get on top of a spine and get little bumps that were all too fleeting.  The lapse rate was not cooperating but we got as far as we could before heading out.  There was no return option to take us back through the pass.

We landed after gliding just over the palm trees, heading straight toward the jungle gym with a quick left past the sprinklers on beautiful green grass in someone’s yard on Toro Canyon Road.  Hopped a fence with a very convenient ladder that was handy and walked, rode, hitched, etc. home.

Happiness is two great flights in one weekend! Yippee!
